Fast Facts

  • It will be paid for by the Treasury not by energy users.
  • There is no ‘National Grid for Heat’ and so importing and exporting heat is not relevant.
  • It will be introduced in stages, with residential schemes not eligible until Phase 2.
  • Biomass systems have been graded to give a 12% return on investment, with 5% for solar thermal.
  • Tariffs will run for 20 years. the payments are tax free and index linked.

RHI is administered by the energy regulator Ofgem

Step One: you install in your property renewable heat systems such as solar thermal panels, heat pumps or a biomass boiler.

Step Two: you measure how much heat your renewable energy systems produce.

Step Three: you get paid a fixed amount based on that output, the type of technology and the size of the system.

  • Introduced in 2 phases - Phase 1, RHI Premium Payments, will be launched in summer 2011, and consists of a one-off payment made to help with the installation costs of renewable technologies.
  • Expected Premium Payment amounts are £300 per system for Solar Thermal and £950 for biomass systems.
  • Phase 2, RHI tariffs, will be launched in October 2012 - details of amounts to be released in summer 2011.

The Government says:

In return for the payments, participants will be asked to provide some feedback on how the equipment works in practice. This information will help enable Government, manufacturers, installers and consumers to better understand how to maximise performance of the various technologies. ... [This] will help ensure that before we commit to long term payments in a sector where it is particularly difficult to predict levels of take-up and performance of different technologies, we manage their roll out and learn more about them, as well as controlling the budget and ensuring the money goes where it is intended to.

FAQ's

How long will the RHI run for?

Renewable Heat Incentive will accept new applicants until at least 2020.

Any new registrations up until then will receive tariffs for 20 years from their registration date.

Will existing installations be affected if reviews or degression take place?

No. Once an installation is registered for RHI, its' tariff is fixed for the entire term - apart from increasing due to being index-linked for inflation.

How is the capacity of a heating system ascertained?

In principle, the capacity of a heating system is ascertained by the manufacturer's rating for the maximum heat output of the system.

Does the Renewable Heat Incentive only apply to heat? What about gas? What about electricity?

The RHI applies to most forms of heat provided by renewable sources. Stove Shop Renewables designs and installs biomass and solar thermal systems.
