Ground source heat pumps

A ground source heat pump system uses the natural heat from the ground. A pipe is laid in loops just below the Earth's surface, the more heat you need the longer the pipes and the more loops. The pipes are filled with a mixture of water and antifreeze. When this liquid is pumped around the looped pipe it absorbs some heat from the ground it is passing through. This heat can be then transferred into a heating system in the house and used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems and even hot water.

Normally the pipe is laid out in flat loops just under the surface or coiled in trenches which can be around two metres deep. However not everyone has a large enough space in their garden, in this case you can install the pipe vertically, with the loops going down to a depth of up to 100 metres. However shallow loops are easier and cheaper to install, as well as being far easier to access should they need maintenance or repairs.

Highly energy efficient

A ground source heat pump is incredibly efficient, the actual efficiency is measured by comparing the energy used to run the pump with the heat generated. We offer Baxi heat pumps which can provide 4kW of usable heat for every kilowatt of electricity used. This provides a substantial drop in costs, both in terms of fuel used and carbon emissions every year.

Our selection of Baxi ground source heat pumps include the largest range of systems on the market. We have models designed to get the best results depending on the size your home, from 4kW to 20kW.

Also bear in mind that including the installation works as part of either a new build or complete renovation will offset the costs.
